Rights Out of Thin Air

Another Court, this time in New Jersey, has decided that the civil rights of Gays is violated if they cannot marry or enter into some other form of union. My question is, has been, and will remain, what civil right is it, and why is it applicable to gays, but I assume not to polygamists, or people who want to marry their a dolphin [there was someone who actually wanted to] , or any other permutation on a theme that you can think of?

In declaring this civil right, the NJ judges found no reason that Gays should be denied the right to marry, as opposed to New York, which found the institution of marriage between a man and a woman as fulfilling a beneficial function for the state. I guess they have not seen the studies from Europe, where in the aftermath of the legalization of Gay marriage there has been an explosion in out of wedlock births as  traditional marriage has lost the imprimatur it has had for centuries. Or all those studies in this country which conclude that a traditional household is the healthiest to raise children in. Instead,  once again an activist court has ignored data which argues against Gay marriage, and invented from whole cloth a right which applies to Homosexual and Heterosexual couples [I guess the number two has a mystical meaning for the judiciary, but nothing else does] but presumably not any other combination of partners, at least not yet. As a Conservative, I naturally defend the sanctity of traditional marriage, but the truly troubling aspect of this is the justification by deference to civil rights. If a state legislature wants to bestow the right of marriage to Gays, fine, let them. But by devising new rights the judges are creating a situation where the law of unintended consequences can literally run riot. This is Liberalism at its worst, devising and imposing changes on society by fiat, with the best [?]of intentions but usually the worst of results. Where it will lead is unknown, but if something isn't done to rein in judicial activists, don't bet against those Dolphin nuptials .

A Scandal You Don't See in the MSM

Diana Irey, who is running against Murtha, has written an informative article which serves dual purposes: enlightening us about the true extent of Murtha's involvement in the Abscam investigation, and highlighting the MSM's failure to give this story anywhere near the exposure the Foley scandal has received. No matter how many examples we find of this kind of egregious, biased coverage, its important that we make an effort to undue the harm it causes and the ignorance it fosters. You should read what Irey writes.

Vote Obama-Because He is Black

Richard Cohen of the Washington Post writes about the possible candidacy of Barack Obama for the Presidency, and the article frankly sickened me. After honestly admitting the man has no experience or track record to speak of, Cohen advocates for him because he is black, and has "no baggage" regarding the Iraq war! Even throwing in the customary comparisons to JFK, the fawning about his speeches, yadayadayada, this is what his whole argument comes down to: it would be refreshing to see a Black man as President, and he may be able to get us out of Iraq because he essentially never voted to authorize it. This is the man some Democrats are putting forth as their candidate for the most powerful position in the world. Wow, I'm convinced, where do I sign up for "the Obama or bust" movement? Seriously, this shows the intellectual paucity of the Liberal position if anyone still needs proof of it. This candidacy may be "a joke" [Cohen's words], but  that Liberals may be seriously considering it based on these justifications is horrifying. That a professional political reporter like Cohen can even make the argument is just downright depressing. And to top it all off, these are the people who may win control of Congress in two weeks. All I can say, in the spirit of the Halloween season, is be afraid, very afraid.

This is Justice?

Jeffrey Skilling of Enron notoriety is to be sentenced today, and most are expecting a minimum of 25 years to be handed down. Last week Lynn Stewart received 28 months for aiding a terrorist,  given to her by a Clinton appointed judge. Thus in our society today a white collar financial felony is considered approximately ten times as heinous as assisting terrorists if we operate under the supposition that the penalty fits the crime. Thus a person who lost money on Enron stock is considered to have been hurt more significantly than one of those who die in a terrorist attack. Think about that, and then realize how our judicial system has been hijacked by the Liberals and made to reflect their political correctness, which equates capitalism and its abuses with the most terrible acts perpetrated by men. Those same Liberals who plead for Gitmo detainees to be humanely treated are salivating at the thought of punishing Skilling with a lifetime conviction. Now I am not making light of his crimes, though having followed the trial and read a book written by a NY Times reporter on it, I cannot in all fairness say Skilling was guilty of all he is charged with, and may be no more culpable than to the extent that he ignored the obvious due to his ambition and pride. But does he deserve to be incarcerated for the rest of his life after Stewart was given essentially a slap on the wrist? And remember, what this really represents is the criminalization of Capitalism and Big Business by the Left, as they are able to make these white collar offenders into the most despicable of people. The statue of this Justice is not blind and balancing a scale, but rather reading a copy of Das Kapital while wearing a Che T-shirt. Thus we see the Liberal agenda for national security: arrest an accountant today.

Islamic Clerics Decry Violence

As a supporter of the Iraq War, I have to admit my major concern has always been the violence espoused in the Qu'ran regarding infidels and apostates. Yes, Christianity has its bloody past as well, but the major difference to me is that, where the Christian episodes have been a result of men's decisions in implementing their Faith, the New Gospel, and Christ's teachings , never advocate the kind of forced conversions, or punishments that the Qu'ran does. The fact that the sword is imbedded in the most basic teachings of Islam is a troubling fact, which is why this article from the Washington Time's reporting on a joint statement by both Shia and Sunni clerics renouncing violence in Iraq is a positive, optimistic event which hopefully will begin to ease the sectarian distrust and violence. And just to note in passing, the NY Times doesn't seem to be following this story yet, but instead is headlining the increasing importance of the militias for the people of Iraq.  As  I have said before, "Only the News They See Fit to Print".

Hillary Ripped by the LA Times

It's always fun to watch the Liberal media rip apart one of its own who strays from the party's dogma, so  here is an article from the LA Times castigating Clinton for sort of supporting harsh interrogation tactics for terrorists. I found it amusing to see Hillary depicted as too tough on Terrorists, but at the same time depressing that the Left can be so obtuse when it comes to the war we are engaged in. To paraphrase, the road to h*ll is paved by Liberal policies.

The True War Strategy

Victor Davis Hanson is a brilliant military historian and writer who is a welcome counterpoint to so many of the so-called "experts" who hold forth on the war in Iraq, spewing nonsense and popular bias as "truth". Here he answers all those Liberal Monday morning generals who decry our lack of an effective strategy in the War on Terror, presenting our multipronged campaign succinctly and effectively.

I think it is worth pointing out here the difference between strategy and tactics, which is basic to any military planning. Strategy encompasses the overarching goals and comprehensive scenario for achieving them, i.e. defeating Nazi Germany by first attacking at the soft underbelly of Europe [Sicily], and then following with a pincer movement from the Normandy beachheads and Russia. The implementation of the plan, the actual battles, would fall under "tactics" which in any war are constantly being adjusted as real life renders theoretical plans moot. Thus, when the MSM announces a plan to pacify Baghdad has "failed", and things have to be changed, this is just an acknowledgment of a tactical adjustment, and should be treated as such, not as a major reassessment of the war or its aims. The constant harping on the tactics, as well as the daily [sometimes hourly] death tolls, especially in  a war where we have had an amazingly low casualty rate by any standard, are just attempts by the Liberal opposition to make mountains out of molehills. The recent discussions about the TET offensive is indeed apt in this instance, for that was a military disaster for the Viet Cong, and should have been hailed as a major victory for our side, but the Media spun it into the opposite, and it is now seen as the turning point of the war. We cannot allow this kind of distortion of the facts to defeat us in Iraq, for the enemy knows that is the only way he can win.

Birth of A Nation

Does this sound familiar: after a war , a constitution for a new political system for the country is formed and a new political order created. Immediately there are sections of the nation which decry the new system, local revolts and bloodshedding occur, sympathizers of the old regime are targeted for retribution, fights over economic spoils divide the new country, debates over more autonomy for the local areas are acrimonious and foreign powers hover in the background, trying to influence the outcome in their favor. Iraq? No, the new United States between 1781 and 1789 when the Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation. For eight years this country was on the verge of dissolving as the People attempted to create a Democracy, and this for a fairly peaceful population which , while there were religious differences, had none of the animosity and vitriol towards one another that we see in Iraq's warring groups today. It took years of trying by those men we would hail as the Founding Fathers to finally resolve most of the disputes, through trial and error, compromise and ,yes, good fortune,  and even then the establishment of the political parties which governed the Nation resulted in fierce competition and the kind of dirty campaigning that would even make James Carville blush. And it resulted in the greatest political system man has ever implemented.

Now I am not saying that Iraq will ever have as happy an ending as that, though it may. The point is, the answer to the question will not be known for years if not decades. Giving birth to a Nation is a long term ordeal which requires patience, superhuman effort and faith. Those Liberal politicians who scream for an exit strategy, and those media who announce, almost with glee, the latest deathcounts, are not moral, they are reprehensible. Did anyone really expect the US to remove Saddam, and then have a peaceful , functioning Democracy in place in a few years? If they did, they probably should not be in a position of power because they are out of touch with reality, if not worse. To have overturned a ruthless dictator, totally revamped the political structure and have had three national votes resulting in a popularly elected Government within a few years is a mind boggling achievement which should be hailed, not treated as a mundane, everyday occurrence. We are nurturing a new paradigm in the MidEast, one that may, hopefully, one day bring the Islamic Arab population into the 21st century, and by doing so finally humanize a harsh religion which is still in the middle ages in terms of development. This is an epic undertaking which will require an immense effort by the Iraqis and the US, but it must be done if the world is to have security and peace.  And when we get frustrated with how this new nation is progressing, maybe we should remember our own national childhood, and have some patience.

More about Inaccurate Polls

This is a great article I saw on National Review Online about the inaccuracies and distorted use being made of polls by the Liberal establishment.

NY Times still Talking about Cunningham

Randy Cunningham, for crimes he has already been found guilty of months ago, is back in the NY Times today, while, hard as I searched, I found nothing regarding the transgressions of Harry Reid [at least in the online version], which have been popping up over the last few days, and which the MSM has handled with the expected kid gloves. Now I am not going to go into a diatribe about the unfairness and bias of the Main Stream Media, which I have done in the past, and which, if you are on this website, you probably already know about and are appalled by. In truth, this posting is me just venting about what appears to be another egregious instance of a Liberal newspaper trying to influence the election by rehashing an old story which is obviously detrimental to the Republicans in the guise of "News". Perhaps their motto should be changed from "All the News that's Fit to Print" to "Only News We See Fit to Print"? At least it would be more honest.

Reid Forgot Something Else

Harry Reid probably just forgot this too, even though it is a violation of federal election law. No big deal, its not like it was a risque email or something else earth shattering. And lets not forget, the Dems take great pride in not being the party of traditional values, so a minor illegality here and there is nothing to write home about. Just another day in the office I guess.

"We support the Soldiers But Not..."

What does supporting the soldiers but not the war mean anyway? This favorite catchphrase of Dems who want to prove their patriotism is nonsense if you look at it, an attempt to have their cake while wolfing it down. Soldiers are people who are trained to fight wars, plain and simple. To support them, you must be behind what they do, otherwise, what are you supporting? If you say you like a reporter, it means you like the way he presents the news. If you like a baker, you enjoy their pastries. If you support the military, you are an advocate for what they are accomplishing, their stock in trade, which is fighting wars to protect our country. I am disgusted with all those Liberals who hide behind their meaningless blather, afraid to say what they really mean: we are antimilitary, anti-army, and thus anti-soldier. As usual, they do not have the strength of their convictions, and thus seek to fool the masses, who are promilitary, with meaningless drivel. Well, in keeping with this tactic, let me say I am pro-Liberal democrat, but against everyone of their policies and beliefs. Maybe this will make sense to them.

Reid "Amends" Report

So Harry Reid has announced he will amend some reports and ,oh yes, there was a couple of other deals he seemed to have forgotten [See_Here], and now everything is alright. Can you imagine what would have happened to a Republican who forgot to report over $1 million dollars in what appeared to be hidden earnings [since the land was no longer in Reid's name]? The double standards have to stop, the Media has to be held accountable, and when is the Republican Party going to express the righteous anger it should be feeling? Taking the high road is all well and good, but if no one is presenting your case for you, then its time to step up and do it yourself. They owe it to their constituency, and the country.

Liberals and Marriage

The NY Times recently reported that for the first time ever, married opposite sex couples make up a minority of households [49.7%] in the country, which, if true, holds some hope for the Liberals who make up the majority of the Times readers which I will get to in a moment. First , however, I have to say that from numbers they present in  the article I cannot make the math work. These include 5% of the households being comprised of non married opposite sex couples, and about 800,000 [or .7%] being male or female couples, totaling just about 6% total. They also mention that 1 in 20 households [another 5%] have single occupants. Adding the 49.7% to the other 11%  to come up with a  grand total of about 61%. Where is the missing 39% if we have covered married couples, non married couples  and single persons? Maybe it is just a bad day for me, but I cannot figure out what's left that would account for more than 40,000,000 households. If you can, please let me know.

Putting this aside, why is the Times trumpeting this? Well, they might feel that this truly is an Earth shattering revelation that deserves their headlines, because I know I wake up every morning wanting to know the demographic breakdown of US homes, don't you? But if I may, allow me to also point out that some recent articles have correlated married voters with the Republican party, meaning that if they are decreasing, this is good news for Liberals, the Chosen People of the Times. Also, if heterosexual marriage is seen as a declining institution, Gay marriage will probably benefit because they both would appear to be representative of minority constituencies [yes, I know, about 50% vs less than 1%, but who wants to quibble over this!]and suddenly heterosexual marriage is no longer a fundamental pillar of society ["oh  those pesky minority heterosexual  couples can get married, why not us?"]but just another social sexual union which should be open to all. Much like the all too frequent census counts which are ticking off the days that remain until white non-hispanics are a minority in this country, this household breakdown, if we can ever make the numbers add up, is just another indication that Liberals are remaking the country in their image, and the Days of the Conservatives are quickly dwindling.

Given all of the above, it would seem a nice Liberal news organization like the Times would have more than enough reason to follow this story. However, there has always seemed to me to be an underlying bias against marriage in Liberalism which is a reflection of the fact that of all the social institutions Conservatism seeks to protect, marriage maybe  the most important, and thus enemy number 1 of the Left. Why should this be so? Well firstly, it intimately ties religion into the lives of many people, and we all know the Liberal take on religion. But just as importantly, it separates people from the general, homogeneous masses, and creates units of self interest and resources which any self respecting Liberal would prefer go to the government [hence their love of the death tax]. Families offer an alternative to the Government in many respects, and thus competition for the resources and allegiance of the people. Hillary didn't write "It takes a Village" for nothing! Liberals would love to eliminate the atomization of Society caused by marriage, and replace it with a communal population that shares everything. After all, Liberalism taken to its extreme is Communism, which is the ultimate manifestation of this drive to non differentiation. Marriage, neighborhoods, churches, are all ways we express our individuality and independence from the government and its drive to sameness, and so anytime the Times can write an obituary for them, they don't miss the chance. Hopefully, like Mark Twain's, marriage's reported death is greatly exaggerated.

NY Times Cheers UN

The NY Times today headlined the UN resolutions adopted against North Korea as the toughest since the Korean War [for those who don't know, the only reason the UN approved that war was that the USSR boycotted the Security Council Meeting, and thus didn't exercise their veto], and held that impotent organization up to accolades as it went into detail about the strictures imposed. If you continued to read however [the Times usually gets to the important stuff later in the article, sometimes much later], you will find that all military action has been excluded as an option, and that China, the only country that really matters when it comes to trade with North Korea, is indicating it will not enforce the sanctions. What remains is the best we could hope for from the UN, but probably nothing more than useless window dressing, giving cover to those who want to say diplomacy worked, while postponing the true day of reckoning. And the Times gets the chance to hail another of the icons of Liberalism, the United Nations, which, like the newspaper itself, reminds me of the lines from Macbeth about sound and fury signifying nothing.
